Why this piece?
I chose this artwork not only because it is physically appealing, but because of the things that it reminds me of; my younger sister and I are about 3 years apart and also have brown hair. When we were younger, we went on a trip to Florida for my dad's wedding. The celebration lasted many days, and we spent many of these days at Disney World and at the amazing beaches that Florida has to offer. Seeing this picture reminded me of this amazing trip and how much I absolutely adore my younger sister. We have always been pretty close, and this work of art perfectly depicted us as siblings. After hearing Sherry's story behind the painting, it just reminded me of my sister and I more. I love the materials used in the painting and the way that the details are not super sharp, but more relaxed and flowing. I think that this artist is truly talented, and after seeing the painting, hearing the story, and meeting the wonderful woman that painted this, I can honestly say this artwork is one of my favorites for many reasons. Of course after falling in love with this work of art, I had to see what else Sherry Thurston had to offer, so she gave me a tour of her gallery and many other works of art. She has been to so many places and done so many incredible things. One of her more famous local pieces of work are the Snead's Ferry sneakers (pictured below). These sneakers are the artists depiction of the shoes worn by many of the people in Sneads Ferry, NC, and have been popular around the greater Onslow County area since 1992. She has also painted a landscape painting of a portion of the city of Jacksonville, NC. This work is called "Between the Bridges," and is pictured below as well. This work took Sherry a lot of time, considering all of the detail put into it and how large it is. Another amazing work by Sherry is entitled "My Beach House." This is pictured below and this piece is significant to me as well as Sherry. Sherry had expressed to me that she loved to paint pictures of the beach and the ocean, as if it were her sanctuary. After seeing not only the painting "Friendship" but her other paintings as well, I had come to the conclusion that a piece of Sherry's work belongs in everyone's home, because her hard work, dedication, and skill shine through in everything she does.
